Set in 1913, GOLDEN DOOR begins in a treacherous, barren, and rocky area of the Sicilian countryside. On advice from a stranger, a widowed father named Salvatore Mancuso (Vincenzo Amato) decides to make the difficult voyage to America with his two sons (one of whom is deaf and mute) and his stubborn, highly superstitious mother, Fortunata (Aurora Quattrocchi). Just before boarding the boat, they meet Lucy (Charlotte Gainsbourg), a mysterious and refined British woman who pretends to be with the Mancuso family while their pictures are being taken. During their journey, Lucy tells Salvatore she needs to find a man to marry before arriving in New York. The reasons are never fully explained, but Salvatore is attracted to her, and so he agrees. After arriving at Ellis Island, the family must endure the long battery of tests that are part of the standard entrance procedure. The plot of GOLDEN DOOR is simple, but the film is not, thanks to interesting stylistic choices. What differentiates GOLDEN DOOR from other films of its genre are the surrealist, imaginative avenues it takes most unexpectedly. Amid a sea of authentic costumes and realistic sets, director Emanuele Crialese places playful scenes of stunning beauty. This gives the film an open feel and an optimism one would never expect from the opening sequence, which is bleak, to say the least. As the characters travel to America, their minds open up to a new way of seeing. The experience of the journey is presented as difficult, but never horrific, and the strength of the characters is in their ability to remain dignified, even under potentially humiliating scenarios.

Triangle (2009)

It’s déjà vu all over again for the heroine of Chris Smith’s mind-bending psychological thriller, which marks a quantum leap forward from ‘Creep’ and ‘Severance’. During a weekend sailing trip, a freak wave capsizes Greg’s yacht, forcing him, single mother Jess (Melissa George) and a group of his friends to board a passing ocean liner. Onboard the mysteriously empty ship, all the clocks have stopped, the ‘Shining’-like corridors are spookily silent, and Jess has an uncanny feeling that she’s been here before. Then a hooded figure starts hunting them down and killing them one by one. Shotguns are fired, fire axes are wielded and bodies pile up on the decks. Fiendishly constructed, this plays like a dark, disturbing ‘Twilight Zone’ episode. Events repeat themselves but are subtly different each time, so we share, as well as observe, Jess’s spiralling sense of dislocation. Melissa George’s fearless, credible performance grounds the madness in a moving emotional reality, even as her sanity is lost at sea.

The Killing Room (2009)

I'll preface this review by stating a plain opinion: I am not a fan of the films directed by Mr. Jonathan Liebesman. One was a flaccid PG-13 wankfest (Darkness Falls) and the other was the grungy-yet-way too familiar Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning. But I respect the fact that this director stays in the horror field, because that tells me he's a fan of the genre and he's intent on making some good films. And hey, at least for me, the third time is the charm, as far as Liebesman is concerned.

The filmmaker's latest is a rough and tough psychological thriller called The Killing Room, and it's about a group of four strangers who are brought together for a paid experiment -- but they're actually in for a whole lot more anguish than they expected. Turns out the testing is overseen by a devious scientist who works well outside the realm of government control and law enforcement. And simple morality. Basically, the goal here is to see how human lab rats react when confronted by a shocking bit of violence followed by a lengthy stint of incarceration.

The script is canny enough to keep you guessing throughout the plot's more conventional contortions, but The Killing Room earns some fair praise for actually TRYING to keep you guessing. That's not to say that the flick hinges entirely upon some big, shocking twist, but one feels a sense of gratitude when a horror-thriller even bothers with unexpected divergences or surprises that feel relatively satisfying. Plus the final zinger is actually pretty cool, albeit in a very dark and cynical way.

And even when the flick slows down (which, to be honest, it does once in a while), the good news is that Liebesman is working with a colorful ensemble that has no trouble keeping the action interesting. Timothy Hutton, Shea Whigham, Clea Duvall, and Nick Cannon are the lab rats, and the overseers are played by a villainous Peter Stormare and an unsure Chloe Sevigny. Not a weak link among the cast, if you ask me, and they do a fine job of keeping a potentially outlandish concept grounded in a reality we can actually recognize.

The film's best moments come during the opening set-up and the closing sequences, but there's certainly enough here to warrant a look. The Killing Room feels more like a surprisingly engaging cable flick / DVD rental than it does a full-bore "Friday Night Out" sort of movie, but genre fans who like a little psychological mayhem mixed in with their more traditional carnage should find something to like in this scrappy little chiller.

Genuine originality in video games is rare, and when it comes to puzzle games, doubly so. Even some of the best, most recent examples of the genre, such as D3's inventive Puzzle Quest, have merely been really good amalgams of well-established game concepts. Crush for the PlayStation Portable is an action puzzle game that owes very little of its novel concept to games that preceded it, and it capitalizes on its M.C. Escher-inspired gameplay with a healthy number of increasingly involved puzzles. It's challenging without being too frustrating, and it's easily one of the more unique puzzle games to come around in years
